Governments across Asia Pacific are enforcing tighter controls to regulate not just what users post but who can participate on these platforms. This shift in regulation is seen in nations like Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Australia, where measures range from identity verification to age restrictions. According to CNA, these changes aim for safer online experiences, but they also risk alienating users.

Regulatory Reforms: A Double-edged Sword

While the targeted aim is to enhance safety on social media, blanket rules may not achieve this. Restrictions that forcibly eject users due to age, anonymity, or identity can lead to silence or drive them to less regulated platforms. Take Australia’s under-16 ban, for example. Although meant to protect children, its implications on actual safety and user behavior remain uncertain. As Sonia Livingstone suggests, meaningful participation is key, not mere presence nor exclusion.

The Illusion of Visibility

Current measures often equate visibility with accountability and invisibility with risk—a notion that’s misleading. Anonymity does not only mask malicious intent; it is a refuge for those needing silence to experiment and seek solace. Marginalized communities and whistleblowers require anonymity to voice their truths safely. It is vital that digital spaces remain inclusive and creative, not just regulated fortresses prioritizing visibility.
