With California facing unprecedented budget constraints, innovative solutions are more critical than ever. The Earth System Digital Twin project at CSU LA aims to leverage both AI and data derived from satellite and ground-based sources. The Brains Behind the Project

At the helm of this ambitious endeavor is Mohammad Pourhomayoun, director of the AI and Data Research Lab at CSU LA. Pourhomayoun, alongside his dedicated team and enthusiastic students like Bohdan Hrotovytskyy, are harnessing the power of computational methods that can process vast sets of data—undoubtedly an impossible feat for human analysis alone.

“By providing firefighters with crucial insights, we’re not only making their jobs safer but also preventing large-scale tragedies,” says Pourhomayoun. The system, still under development, draws on the lessons painfully learned from previous disasters, such as the Palisades and Eaton fires that left a scar on the community.
