Innovative Program Blends STEM Learning with Sports and Fun

Tech Jun 13, 2025

In an era where classroom learning is often confined to textbooks and screens, a new initiative called STEM Playbook is breaking the mold by combining education, technology, and physical activity. Brought to the Struthers Elementary and Sebring’s B.L. Miller Elementary schools by the United Way of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley, this innovative program is part of their Success After Six endeavor.

Redefining Education Through Play

STEM Playbook is making waves by weaving STEM subjects into engaging activities like whack-a-mole and boxing. “It’s kind of reimagining what education should be,” said co-founder Katie Grootegode. Students are not just passive recipients; they are active participants, building confidence through memory games and kinesthetic learning. Learning is aligned with state standards but takes a fresh approach by infusing sports like the boxing and reaction-time games.

A Hands-On Approach to Learning

The program emphasizes practical applications. Grootegode explained a memorable activity: students gauged reaction times using rulers, reinforcing math concepts. This hands-on experience brings abstract concepts to life, connecting education to real-world experiences, and setting a new standard for interactive learning. According to Business Journal Daily, STEM Playbook is a new frontier in educational methodology.

Community Engagement and Growth

Engaging the entire community is essential for STEM Playbook’s success. Partnering with Nex Playground, the program integrates video games that encourage movement, such as a futuristic whack-a-mole. It’s not just about competition but understanding how physical exertion affects their bodies, with discussions about pulse rates and oxygen levels further enhancing learning.

Bridging Gaps with Innovative Programming

Roxann Sebest from the United Way highlighted the integration of STEM Playbook in various schools, filling a crucial need, particularly for middle-grade students. The involvement of Covelli Enterprises illustrates a model of how businesses can support educational innovation. The program’s expansion is a testament to its impact and vision for enriching student experiences across multiple schools as part of Youngstown’s educational landscape.

A Future of Learning Expansion

This isn’t just an academic program; it’s a movement showing that learning has no bounds. By making education fun and relatable, the United Way and STEM Playbook are fostering a love of learning and curiosity among young students, perfectly demonstrating how education and entertainment can go hand-in-hand to create a brighter future.
