The country announced this amid the release of the Russian government's decree on the creation of a new operator for the project, said Economy, Trade and Industry Minister Koichi Hagiuda.

The Sakhalin-2 project, which accounts for about 8% of Japan's LNG imports, is extremely important for Tokyo in terms of ensuring stable supplies of energy resources, said Hirokazu Matsuno, general secretary of the Japanese Cabinet of Ministers.
