ODOC Soars to New Heights with Cutting-Edge Drone Security
Pioneering Innovation at Red Rock
The Oklahoma Department of Corrections (ODOC) is setting a precedent in correctional facility security with the groundbreaking integration of drone technology. This forward-thinking approach seeks to revolutionize how security is maintained at the Red Rock Correctional Center, addressing the persistent issue of contraband smuggling while ensuring the safety of staff and inmates.
Drone Technology: A Game Changer
Consortium partners, Skydio and Levatas, in collaboration with the ODOC, implemented a pilot program of unmanned drones and AI-driven systems at the facility. “Innovation in corrections is at the heart of our mission,” remarked ODOC Chief of Operations, Jason Sparks. With real-time data collection and surveillance, these drones not only enhance security but also optimize resource allocation and operational efficiency.
Enhancing Security and Efficiency
The introduction of these autonomous drones marks a shift from traditional security practices, such as round-the-clock perimeter patrols by officers. “By integrating drone technology, we aim to eliminate the constant patrol that causes vehicle wear and tear,” shared Candice Moore, Chief Administrator of IT and Project Management. This change not only conserves resources but redirects efforts towards detainee rehabilitation.
Training the Future Fleet
Moving beyond mere technology, the ODOC is also investing in training correctional officers to become adept drone pilots. These certified operators maintain a vigilant watch over the facility’s activities, reinforcing security protocols and deterring illegal activities.
Continuous Improvement and Expansion
Upon concluding an initial 45-day trial, the ODOC will evaluate cost-effectiveness and the program’s success rate. Encouraging results may lead to widespread adoption across other state facilities, exemplifying a transformative approach in corrections management. As stated in Oklahoma.gov, this state-of-the-art program is set to redefine security within correctional institutions.
With drones as the new sentinels of Red Rock, potential threats from contraband are minimized, and officers can return their focus to transformative rehabilitation. Envisioning a safer tomorrow, ODOC continues to trailblaze in correctional innovation.
