The European Commission recommended that EU countries immediately cancel all schemes to obtain "golden passports" (citizenship in exchange for investment) and consider cancelling such passports previously issued to citizens of Russia and Belarus, which are under sanctions

"European values are not for sale. We believe that the sale of citizenship through "golden passports" is illegal and poses serious risks to our security. It opens the door to corruption, money laundering and tax evasion," said European Commissioner for Justice Didier Reynders.
