The Sobering Shift: Corporate Circles Embrace Mindful Drinking

Economics Apr 13, 2025

In an era marked by mindfulness and wellness, a remarkable transformation is taking place in boardrooms and startup hubs worldwide: a shift away from traditional alcohol-centered gatherings to a culture of mindful drinking and sometimes complete abstinence.

The Rise of the Sober Movement

This evolution is particularly pronounced among young professionals and corporate leaders who are reimagining social interactions. In cities like Bengaluru, Mumbai, and Delhi, alcohol is still present but consumed in moderation. Parminder Singh, CEO of Kampd, notes, “Corporate chiefs, once avid connoisseurs of fine wines, are now choosing a single diluted drink to keep up appearances.”

A New Social Norm

Gone are the tales of courage fueled by liquor; these days, individuals are more inclined to boast about their fitness levels. As Nitin Sharma, partner at Antler, puts it, “Flaunting fitness metrics has become more fashionable.” With the growing popularity of fitness tracking devices, sober consciousness is on the rise.

A Vibrant Alternative to The Traditional Scene

In Bengaluru, the buzz is about kombucha parties and social fitness events. According to Anmol Maini of Untitled Ventures, activities like arcade games at corporate events create unparalleled camaraderie. “People relaxed, less on edge—it really changed the vibe,” Maini shares.

A Health-Driven Revolution

Neha Reddy of Antler VC observes that people seek alternatives that merge wellness with entertainment. “It’s refreshing to have the energy of a night out without alcohol,” she says. From pickleball mixers to community workouts, wellness is at the forefront of this social renaissance.

Industry’s Responsive Shift

Acknowledging this change, leading alcohol companies are aligning with consumer preferences. Diageo India has fortified its portfolio with products like ‘Sober’, catering to the sober-curious. Meanwhile, startups like Sober are innovating with non-alcoholic spirits, tapping into a growing demand for healthier choices.

Despite societal judgments, many find creativity in maintaining social engagement without alcohol. Pretend drinks like ‘Dhoka Cola’ and ‘nimbu soda’ allow people to blend in while upholding their wellness goals.

As stated in The Economic Times, this mindful evolution signals a deeper cultural shift, where corporate environments are embracing wellness as a pivotal aspect of social interactions. It’s a movement redefining how professionals connect, communicate, and unwind.
