Fitch Ratings has placed its long-term foreign currency issuer rating on "AAA" with a downgrade option. For U.S. benchmark debt, this is a very alarming call.

Fitch associates the increased risk with the protracted disputes in Congress over the debt ceiling. It's simply impossible to leave this fact unnoticed. It's expected that other agencies will also begin to reduce the rating of the United States in the near future.

In 2011 S&P Global Ratings downgraded the United States from "AAA". This provoked a violent sale of risky assets. Then the S&P 500 index fell 17% in 2 weeks.
